Interpreted as an Intention to Proceed with Appointments
Spokesperson Kang Yujeong: "Cannot Allow Further Administrative Vacuum, Request Made with Two-Day Deadline"
On September 10, President Lee Jaemyung renewed his request to the National Assembly to submit confirmation hearing reports for Choi Kyojin, nominee for Minister of Education; Lee Eokwon, nominee for Chairman of the Financial Services Commission; and Joo Byungki, nominee for Chairman of the Fair Trade Commission, by September 11. This move is interpreted as an intention to proceed with the appointment process for these nominees.
Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the presidential office, explained in a written briefing that this action was taken because, although the confirmation hearing period for the three nominees ended on September 8, the National Assembly had not adopted the reports.
Spokesperson Kang added, "We had been waiting for the reports to be adopted and sent through bipartisan agreement, but as we cannot allow a further administrative vacuum, we are now requesting their submission again, providing a two-day period today and tomorrow."
According to the Confirmation Hearing Act, if the National Assembly fails to adopt the confirmation hearing report within the designated period, the president may set a new deadline within 10 days and request the resubmission of the report. If the National Assembly still does not comply, the president may proceed with the appointment.
