Jeong Cheongrae Expresses Support for "World's No. 1 Samsung Semiconductor"... Vows to Back Special Semiconductor Law (Comprehensive)

On-site Meeting Held at Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus
"Full-scale National Support and Investment Needed"
"Party to Focus Efforts on Supporting the Special Semiconductor Law"

Jeong Cheongrae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 10th, "We will focus the party's efforts on making Korea the world's number one semiconductor nation," and added, "We will create and support a special semiconductor law."

On this day, Jeong, accompanied by Han Jeongae, the Democratic Party's Policy Committee Chair, and other party members, visited Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus in Gyeonggi Province and held an "on-site meeting for the development of the semiconductor industry." He also wrote in the guestbook, "I support Samsung, the world's number one semiconductor."

Jeong commented, "It's my first time here, and I was truly amazed. It's like an entire city is inside, bustling with many people, and I thought the scale was truly worthy of Samsung." He continued, "I wrote in the guestbook to express my wish for Samsung to be number one in the world in semiconductors. I hope Samsung Semiconductors will become Korea's future growth engine, proudly leading the world and serving as a source of pride for Korea."

He added, "I heard that the construction of Pyeongtaek Plant 5, which had been delayed due to rapidly changing trade conditions, has resumed. This is truly fortunate. I sincerely hope the construction will be completed smoothly and become the foundation for Korea's semiconductor technology to take another leap forward."

Jeong stated, "The semiconductor industry is currently facing major challenges. Trade uncertainties are increasing, and latecomer countries are rapidly catching up in technology. Nevertheless, it is a point of pride that in August, semiconductor exports rose 27.1% year-on-year, reaching a record high. This achievement is thanks to those present here today."

He also expressed his intention to support legislative efforts. Jeong said, "With the United States, Europe, and Japan all introducing semiconductor support policies, I believe there is no reason for us to delay any longer. We must enhance industrial competitiveness through full-scale national support and investment." He continued, "I will do my utmost to ensure the swift passage in the National Assembly of the special semiconductor law, which includes infrastructure development, facility expansion, and research and development support."

During the meeting, Samsung reportedly requested Jeong to expedite the processing of the special semiconductor law and to improve regulations. Kwon Hyangyeop, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said, "The special semiconductor law was designated as a fast-track bill last April, and Samsung requested cooperation so that it can be processed to secure competitiveness." Kwon added, "Jeong replied that if all fast-track requirements are met, it can be discussed and processed in the relevant committee."

There were also requests for regulatory innovation. Spokesperson Kwon stated, "There was a request to work on reforming overlapping or unreasonable regulations. In order to foster advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors and enhance competitiveness, there was a call to boldly reform unnecessary and redundant regulations." Regarding this, Jeong reportedly responded, "It is necessary to review this at the policy committee level and to coordinate with relevant committees and the government."

Additionally, Samsung requested that the Democratic Party and the government pay attention to preventing technology leaks and securing professional talent.
