Supporting the Improvement of Medical School Practical Training Environments
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on September 10 that it has newly designated two hospitals-Seoul St. Mary's Hospital affiliated with the Catholic University of Korea and Ewha Womans University Medical Center-as "Anatomical Education Support Centers."
The Anatomical Education Support Center operation support project was newly introduced this year as part of the "Investment Plan to Improve Medical School Education Conditions" announced last year, with the aim of enhancing the environment for medical students' anatomy practice.
The centers will provide counseling to individuals willing to donate their bodies, facilitating the donation of cadavers to medical schools experiencing shortages. They will also offer comprehensive guidance to medical schools on the entire body donation process, including donation counseling, consent procedures for donors or their families, posthumous honors, and support, to ensure that each university's donation system operates smoothly. In addition, to prepare for temporary surges in educational demand, the Anatomical Education Support Centers will provide cadavers and practical spaces for anatomy training.
Jung Tongryeong, Director of Public Health Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, stated, "As this project is in its early stages, we will continue to gather feedback from the field regarding the body donation system and the use of cadavers for medical education and research, so that the environment for anatomy practice for medical students can be improved."
