First-term People Power Party Lawmakers Criticize Han Gil Jeon on the Same Day
Kim Yongtae: "To Make the Conservative Party Healthy, We Must Cut Ties"
Kim Jaeseop: "He Has No Real Power... There's No Need to Pay Attention"
First-term lawmakers Kim Yongtae and Kim Jaeseop of the People Power Party drew attention by strongly criticizing Han Gil Jeon, a former Korean history instructor, on the same day. On September 9, during an interview on the Korea Daily YouTube channel "Issue Jeonpasa," Assemblyman Kim Yongtae said, "Before the impeachment, at various rallies, I found it very bizarre and hurtful to my pride to see senior lawmakers bowing at a 90-degree angle in a 'folder greeting' whenever Jeon appeared."
Assemblyman Kim Yongtae added, "Even now, there are politicians who try to be swayed by such people, and it makes me feel a great sense of self-doubt. For a conservative party to become healthy, we need to cut ties with people like that first." He continued, "Far-right YouTubers and politicians are constantly agitating decent citizens," and claimed, "A significant number of those referred to as 'Yoon Again' have been incited."
Assemblyman Kim Jaeseop, in an interview on Channel A's radio show "Political Signal" on September 9, commented about Jeon, "Isn't he just a parrot repeating claims about election fraud and the Gye Mong Ryeong? For someone who has become an 'election fraud parrot,' we shouldn't feed them (give them attention)." He continued, "I hope he continues in his role and makes a lot of money. If he had any real power, we would take action, but he has none," adding, "Since spreading falsehoods is just a way for him to make money, I don't think we need to pay any attention to him in the first place."
After the December 3 Martial Law, Jeon took the lead in the anti-impeachment movement against former President Yoon Suk Yeol by promoting election fraud conspiracy theories, and later exerted influence over the People Power Party's leadership election. During a party leadership debate, People Power Party leader Jang Donghyuk was asked, "Between former party leader Han Donghoon and Jeon, whom would you nominate?" and he answered Jeon. Afterwards, Jang compared Jeon to a volunteer soldier, saying, "He played a significant role from outside the party."
Recently, on his own YouTube channel, Jeon has continued to demonstrate his influence, claiming, "'Jeon Han Gil News' has 530,000 subscribers, and if all of them joined the People Power Party, which currently has 750,000 members, they could control the party." However, he has consistently stated that "politics does not suit me," and has expressed his intention to focus on being a spokesperson for the conservative camp rather than participating directly in politics. When rumors emerged about his potential nomination for Daegu mayor next June, he said, "If Lee Jinsook, the chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, runs, I will absolutely step aside for her."
