"Controversy Arises with Every New Administration... Institutional Remedies Needed"
As the ruling party prepares a bill to align the terms of public institution heads with that of the president, Im Gigeun, the Second Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance, stated, "I agree with the intent of the bill."
During a plenary session of the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee held that day, Vice Minister Im said, "Each provision's validity and potential side effects require in-depth review during the subcommittee discussions," expressing his opinion in this manner.
Vice Minister Im explained, "Whenever a new administration takes office, endless controversy and side effects are repeated," adding, "Now, it is a situation that requires institutional remedies."
He further noted, "During the last National Assembly, there were serious discussions between the ruling and opposition parties to reach a consensus, and I understand that they came close to reaching an agreement on the overall framework."
The Democratic Party of Korea is pursuing an amendment to the Act on the Management of Public Institutions to align the terms of public institution heads with that of the president.
The opposition People Power Party is opposing this move, citing a report from the National Assembly Research Service which states that among the member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), none align the terms of public institution heads with that of the president.
