Incheon Seo District has become the most populous basic local government area in the country.
As of August 31, the resident registration population of Seo District reached 646,703, surpassing Seoul Songpa District (645,953) to claim the top spot in population, the district announced on September 8.
Seo District has seen a steady influx of residents, crossing the 500,000 mark in 2015 and the 600,000 mark in 2023, driven by large-scale urban developments such as Cheongna, Geomdan, and Lu1 City.
Seo District was established in January 1988, when it was separated from Incheon Buk District, starting with a population of 154,000 across 12 legal neighborhoods. At that time, it was known locally as a "Gaegunne" village, meaning an area that could only be reached by crossing tidal flats in Incheon.
Due to the administrative reorganization of Incheon scheduled for July next year, Seo District will be split into Geomdan District, which includes the Geomdan area, and the remaining Seo District.
To celebrate achieving the number one population ranking, the district is holding a congratulatory quiz event through its official social networking service (SNS) until September 21. Three hundred winners will be selected by lottery to receive prizes such as a 10,000 won Naver Pay voucher or an iced Americano gifticon.
