Volkswagen to Launch Four Low-Cost Electric Vehicles...Aims to Counter Chinese EVs [IAA 2025]

Volkswagen Unveils Ambitious EV Lineup Plan
Audi and Porsche Showcase Next-Generation Design and Technology

Volkswagen has announced plans to launch four compact electric vehicles priced in the 20,000-euro range by 2027. The company will roll out a series of affordable electric vehicles based on a new platform starting next year, aiming to compete head-to-head with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers in the main EV markets of Europe and China.

On September 8 (local time), Volkswagen unveiled this strategy at a pre-event held a day before the opening of 'IAA Mobility 2025' in Munich, Germany. At the same time, Volkswagen also revealed the entry-level all-electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) 'ID.Cross Concept' for the first time in the world.

Volkswagen plans to officially launch three entry-level electric vehicles priced around 25,000 euros (approximately 40 million won), starting with the mass-production model ID.Polo in 2026, followed by the high-performance ID.Polo GTI and the ID.Cross. In 2027, the company will add the mass-production model ID.Every1, priced at around 20,000 euros (approximately 32 million won), to build a total lineup of four compact electric vehicles.

The ID.Cross Concept, unveiled at the event, is Volkswagen's fourth compact electric concept car and serves as a key model in its next-generation urban electric vehicle lineup. It is scheduled for release next year with a driving range of 420 km per charge (based on European standards) and a price of 25,000 euros.

Meanwhile, Audi, the premium brand of Volkswagen Group, introduced its new design philosophy, 'Audi Concept C,' which centers on clarity. The concept of a pure electric sports car, unveiled earlier this month in Milan, Italy, indicates the direction of future mass-production models.

Massimo Frascella, Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of Audi, presented the new design philosophy for the Audi brand for the first time. The core principles are a focus on clarity and essence, which apply not only to the exterior design of the vehicles but also to their interiors.

Porsche unveiled its new flagship model of the 911 sports car, along with a contactless charging system that is ready for commercialization.

On this day, Porsche introduced the new top-tier model of the 911 series for the first time in the world, showcasing the next stage of its innovative T-Hybrid drive concept. Porsche also demonstrated its contactless charging system, 'Porsche Wireless Charging,' installed in a fluorescent-painted Cayenne Electric prototype. Porsche is the first automaker to complete an 11 kW charging system for battery electric vehicles, integrated with a base plate, up to the mass-production stage.

A Volkswagen Group representative stated, "The core of this year's IAA announcement is the urban electric vehicle family of the Core Brand Group, innovations in battery technology and artificial intelligence (AI), insights into the group's design language, and leading technologies for future smart mobility." The representative added, "Through this event, we will strongly demonstrate Volkswagen Group's leadership in the transformation of mobility technology."
