Emergency Support of 40,000 Liters of Bottled Water
Using Disaster Relief Funds
Gangneung in Gangwon Province has been struggling to secure water for daily use due to the ongoing drought. In response, Sejong City announced on September 8 that it will provide 20,000 bottles of 2-liter bottled water to support the city.
According to Sejong City, Gangneung recorded only 404mm of rainfall by the end of August, marking the lowest precipitation in 114 years since weather monitoring began in 1911. The water storage rate of Obong Reservoir, the main source of drinking water for Gangneung, has dropped to 13 percent, resulting in the suspension of agricultural water supply and causing significant difficulties in providing water for daily use.
To offer at least some relief to local residents suffering from these conditions, Sejong City decided to use its disaster relief fund to provide bottled water.
Public institutions in the region have also joined the water sharing campaign. Sejong Urban Transport Corporation plans to donate 1 million won to the Sejong Community Chest of Korea specifically for bottled water support, while Sejong Local Food Co., Ltd. and Sejong Technopark will each provide bottled water worth 500,000 won.
Kim Hakgyun, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs, stated, "I hope the bottled water, sent with the wishes of Sejong citizens, will help Gangneung citizens overcome this climate disaster crisis. We will continue to cooperate with other local governments to quickly overcome various disasters and crisis situations."
