Convenient AI Home Ecosystem Expands Beyond the Home as a 'Solution' [IFA 2025]

Samsung and LG Unveil AI Home Trends and Strategies
Samsung Showcases "Appliancized" Homes with Modular Housing
LG Expands Solutions to Mobility and Commercial Spaces

The dominant trend at the International Consumer Electronics Fair (IFA) 2025, held in Berlin, Germany, is the "AI Home" solution. The vision is that new technologies applied to home appliances will not remain at the level of simple automation, but will evolve into intelligent services that proactively operate and adapt to users' needs. Samsung Electronics showcased a "modular home" equipped with AI technology and customized appliances, while LG Electronics introduced its expansion into solutions such as "Spielraum," which connects home and mobility.

Samsung Electronics presented its "Smart Modular Home Solution," which applies AI home technology to modular architecture-a next-generation residential model gaining attention-at Messe Berlin during IFA 2025 from the 5th to the 9th (local time). The company set up an experience center for the Smart Modular Home Solution inside a modular building designed as a typical residence with an area of 218㎡ (approximately 66 pyeong).

Upon entering the entrance, visitors encounter security solutions utilizing smart devices such as a smart door lock and AI CCTV. In the living room and kitchen, various built-in appliances, lighting, and sensors are interconnected to create a convenient daily life through Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The built-in appliances can be used immediately after a simple registration process upon moving in. The home also features a heat pump optimized for modular architecture, providing highly efficient heating and cooling.

Chanwoo Park, Vice President of Samsung Electronics, explained, "We are seeing a trend where the entire home is becoming 'appliancized.' When you purchase a home, everything is already connected, so all you need to do is move in, with everything linked through Samsung SmartThings." The process is that partner companies, including Samsung C&T, manufacture the modular homes, and Samsung Electronics installs customized appliances.

Samsung Electronics believes that commercializing modular homes equipped with AI Home technology will not only enable the realization of "net zero homes" that reduce energy consumption, but also increase commercial viability. The company envisions an integrated AI control system that can, for example, pre-activate air conditioning and computers before arriving at the office, and easily control devices in stores.

Vice President Park stated, "When using the AI Saving Mode in the SmartThings app, the home automatically reduces energy consumption for appliances and HVAC products. For example, Samsung drum washing machines supplied in Europe can reduce energy use by up to 70%. Starting with this IFA, we plan to fully commercialize the 'Smart Modular Home' solution, which combines modular architecture with AI Home technology."

LG Electronics also plans to expand its reach through the "AI Home" concept, offering solutions that span homes, mobility, and commercial spaces. No Beomjun, Senior Vice President in charge of HS AI Home Solutions at LG Electronics, said, "AI Home should be a space that provides comfort in life through intelligent judgment and execution, going beyond simple automation. Ultimately, we expect AI Home to evolve into a hyper-personalized solution as customer data continues to accumulate."

LG Electronics aims to rapidly advance the AI Home ecosystem in four stages based on the "LG ThinQ On" hub: "responsive," controlled by conversation; "context-aware," which proactively detects and acts; "judgment-based," providing spatial solutions tailored to user environments; and "autonomous," where AI understands user intent and autonomously coordinates devices.

The AI Home is expected to not only enhance the core functions of home appliances, but also expand as a "solution" that is not limited to a single brand. Appliances from various companies will be connected through a single hub, enabling interaction between products. Furthermore, LG Electronics anticipates that the AI Home ecosystem will expand beyond the home to mobility and commercial spaces. Representative examples include LG Electronics' "Spielraum" and Samsung Electronics' "Smart Modular Home."

The "AI Home," where appliances operate as one and adapt to users' needs, is expected to be implemented in daily life sooner than anticipated. According to market research firm InsightAce Analytics, the global AI-based smart home market was estimated at $15.3 billion last year. It is projected to grow rapidly at an average annual rate of 21.3%, reaching $104.1 billion by 2034.
