Citizens to Name Coffee Created by 'World Champions'... Busan Announces Contest for 'Busan-Style Coffee Beverage'

Naming Contest Open Until September 22
Company and Barista Preference Survey
Eight Finalists to Be Announced in October

Busan Metropolitan Government will select the name of its "Busan-Style Ready-to-Drink (RTD) Coffee Beverage," developed in collaboration with world coffee champions, through a public contest for citizens.

On September 7, the city announced that it would hold a naming contest for the coffee beverage under the theme "Name the Busan Coffee Created by World Coffee Champions," running from September 5 to September 22.

This contest has been organized to decide the name of a new product that will be developed as part of the "Busan-Style Ready-to-Drink Coffee Beverage Development and Branding Business Agreement," which was signed on August 11.

The agreement includes world champion baristas from Busan-Jeon Jooyeon (2019 World Barista Championship), Chu Kyeongha (2021 World Cup Tasters Championship), and Moon Heongwan (2022 World Cup Tasters Championship)-as well as Busan Gyeongnam Milk Cooperative, BGF Retail, and GS Retail.

Anyone can participate in the contest by submitting a proposed name (up to 10 characters) and its meaning (at least 10 characters) via an online link or QR code survey. The city will select a total of eight entries through a first-round internal review and a second-round preference survey involving companies and baristas. The results will be announced on the official website in October.

The judging criteria are originality, suitability, and popularity. The grand prize winner will receive 500,000 won, two excellence awardees will each receive 300,000 won, and five encouragement awardees will each receive 100,000 won in Dongbaekjeon policy support funds.

The selected name will be used for the product name and promotion of the upcoming Busan-Style RTD Coffee Beverage. The beverage will be unveiled to citizens for the first time at the "Busan Is Coffee Day" event, which will be held at Domohon in Suyeong-gu on September 20-21. A tasting event will be held on-site, and public feedback will be incorporated to finalize the product.

"Busan Is Coffee Day" is an event planned to commemorate the historical record of coffee being first consumed in Busan in 1884. The event will feature programs allowing citizens to experience coffee history and culture.

Kim Bongcheol, Director of the Digital Economy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan Government, said, "This is an important project where local coffee talent and citizens join forces to create a beverage that captures Busan's unique character," adding, "We ask for your interest and participation so that this new brand can take root."
