Jung-gu, Seoul Launches AI Pedestrian Signal Automatic Extension System

Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gilseong) has installed a 'pedestrian signal automatic extension system' at two crosswalks in front of Cheonggu Elementary School and Gwanghui Elementary School to create a safe and convenient walking environment for vulnerable road users and residents.

The newly introduced pedestrian signal automatic extension system is a smart traffic solution that uses an artificial intelligence (AI)-based camera to detect pedestrians at the crosswalk in real time and automatically extends the pedestrian signal (green light) if there is not enough time to cross. This helps vulnerable road users with slower walking speeds, such as children, seniors, and people with disabilities, to cross the street safely.

The installation sites were selected through consultations with the Jungbu Police Station and the Western Road Construction Office, focusing on areas with a high risk of pedestrian accidents and heavy foot traffic. Jung-gu expects that the implementation of this system will not only prevent traffic accidents but also greatly enhance pedestrian convenience for residents.

Meanwhile, as another project to create safe school routes, Jung-gu is promoting the 'Heungin Elementary School Area School Route Undergrounding Project.'

This project involves removing and burying overhead lines (L=160m) and utility poles (seven Korea Electric Power Corporation poles and one telecommunication pole) along the section from Cheongguro 6-gil to Dasan-ro 32-gil. Construction will begin this month and is scheduled for completion in April next year.
