"Disappointed Party Members and Citizens...
Taking Full Responsibility and Resigning"
"Sorry for Failing to Support Cho Kuk...
Accepting Criticism, Remaining a Lifelong Party Member"
Hwang Hyunseon, Secretary General of the Party for National Innovation, held an emergency press conference on the 7th and announced his resignation from the post. He stated that he would take responsibility for the controversies within the party, including the sexual misconduct incident that led to the departure of former spokesperson Kang Mijeong.
At the National Assembly Communication Office that morning, Secretary General Hwang said, "It is only right for the Secretary General to take responsibility for disappointing the party members and citizens who have trusted and supported us, which is why I have decided to resign."

Secretary General Hwang added, "I am deeply distressed by the series of incidents within the party, including the sexual misconduct case involving Kang Mijeong, and I offer my apologies and condolences. Although I did my best to strengthen the party, I ultimately caused confusion, and I apologize to the party members and the public," he said, bowing his head.
He repeatedly clarified the handling of the sexual misconduct case, saying, "There was no cover-up or intentional delay." He explained, "At the victim's request, I worked to ensure fairness by forming a committee centered on external members and selecting a law firm. However, I humbly accept the criticism that I focused only on following procedures."
He continued, "It is certainly my fault that I did not fully understand the victim's pain. However, I want to make it clear that the party's shortcomings and mistakes were not an attempt to cover up or evade responsibility."
Secretary General Hwang also mentioned former party leader Cho Kuk, who was embroiled in internal strife immediately after his release. He said, "I apologize to the supporters who had high hopes for Director Cho. The pardon and reinstatement of Director Cho was a major mission for me personally, but I was unable to fully support it."

Regarding the controversy over the gathering and karaoke visit on the day of the Supreme Court ruling on former leader Cho Kuk in December last year, he stated, "I immediately requested an internal audit, and this was my final duty as Secretary General to restore discipline within the organization. I am deeply ashamed and devastated. This, too, is entirely my responsibility."
Secretary General Hwang said, "I will bear all criticism and blame. It is the fate of the person responsible for overseeing all party officials." He added, "Although I am stepping down as Secretary General, I will remain a lifelong member of the Party for National Innovation and continue to stand with our members." He left immediately without taking questions from reporters.
Secretary General Hwang has been considered a close associate of Director Cho, having previously worked together in the Blue House's Office of Civil Affairs.
