Sangju Artificial Climbing Wall Hosts Its First National Event
A Festival Bringing Together Athletes and Citizens

Sangju City in North Gyeongsang Province is simultaneously promoting both its local brand and sports by hosting a nationwide sport climbing competition named after its regional specialty, dried persimmons.

1st Sangju Dried Persimmon Cup National Sport Climbing Competition Kicks Off

Sangju City announced that it will hold the "1st Sangju Dried Persimmon Cup National Sport Climbing Competition" at the Sangju Artificial Climbing Wall from September 6 to 7. More than 300 athletes from across the country will compete in this event.


◆ The First National Competition Held at a State-of-the-Art Facility

The event is organized and hosted by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Mountaineering Federation and the Sangju Mountaineering Federation. It is divided into four categories: high school boys and girls, middle school, upper elementary, and lower elementary divisions. The preliminary rounds will take place on the 6th, followed by the finals on the 7th, where the ultimate winners will be determined.


This competition marks the first nationwide event to be held at the Sangju Artificial Climbing Wall, which opened in April this year. The facility boasts a 16.1-meter outdoor lead wall and speed wall, as well as two 15-meter indoor lead walls, making it one of the top infrastructures in Korea and suitable for hosting international competitions.


◆ "Sangju, a New Possibility Combining Sports and Tourism"

Mayor Kang Youngseok of Sangju City stated, "I hope this competition serves as an opportunity for the Sangju Artificial Climbing Wall to become a nationally renowned attraction," adding, "I look forward to this event becoming a festival where athletes and citizens can enjoy and interact together."


A high school participant said, "The newly built climbing wall is excellent and motivates me to take on new challenges. I am happy that such a major competition is being held in Sangju."


A citizen who visited the site commented, "Sangju, famous for its dried persimmons, is now bringing new vitality to the city by hosting a sport climbing competition. It is a meaningful experience to enjoy something different with my children."


Through this competition, Sangju City plans to promote its local sports infrastructure nationwide, boost tourism and the local economy, and further solidify its position as a 'sports city.'
