Korea's Largest LED Wall
A New Hub for the Regional Video Industry
Mungyeong City in North Gyeongsang Province is emerging as a new hub of innovation for the domestic video content industry, moving beyond its existing image as a filming location for historical dramas.
On September 5, Mungyeong City held an opening ceremony for the advanced public video production facility, "Mungyeong Virtual Studio," at the former Ssangyong Cement site in Singi-dong, and officially began operations.
◆ The Highest Specifications in Korea, with Production Cost Savings
Mungyeong Virtual Studio is a facility established with an investment of 15 billion won from the Ministry of Science and ICT and North Gyeongsang Province. It is attracting attention for enabling small and medium-sized production companies to utilize it at reasonable costs.
Equipped with Korea's largest 532-square-meter LED Wall (main, ceiling, and mobile) and in-camera VFX technology, the studio allows for the creation of final footage with special effects applied in real time during filming. Its ability to reduce production costs and time by up to 35% compared to conventional methods is a key competitive advantage.
◆ Easing the Concentration in the Capital Area... Breathing Room for Regional Production Companies
Currently, 77% of virtual studios in Korea are concentrated in the capital region, and high usage fees have hindered access for regional production companies. With this opening, Mungyeong is taking on the role of dispersing the capital-centered production environment by providing public infrastructure that is accessible to regional production companies.
Mungyeong City plans to use this facility to expand its impact through the development of content linked to tourism and cultural resources, nurturing young talent in cooperation with local universities, and creating new jobs.
◆ Government and Local Authorities Speak with One Voice: "A Regional Innovation Model"
Kang Doseong, Director of Broadcasting Promotion Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "We hope that Mungyeong Virtual Studio will become an advanced content hub that helps small and medium-sized production companies realize their dreams," adding, "The government will also focus on securing core AI and digital-based technologies."
Shin Hyunkook, Mayor of Mungyeong, emphasized, "We will strive to produce video content that captures the history and culture of Mungyeong and fully fulfill our role as a public studio. By working with the central government, North Gyeongsang Province, and private experts, we aim to develop Mungyeong into a center for regional video media."
◆ A Growth Platform for the Regional Economy and Young Talent
Mungyeong Virtual Studio is not just a filming space, but is being evaluated as a convergence growth platform that encompasses regional industry, culture, and education based on AI and digital production. Experts predict that it will become a successful example of establishing advanced production infrastructure outside the capital region.
Mungyeong Virtual Studio is the first experiment in breaking down the barriers of a capital-centered video production environment and represents a new growth model for balanced regional development. The key question is whether this public infrastructure will translate into real opportunities for regional production companies and young talent.
