Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province (Governor Nam Hankwon) announced that the 56th Ulleung County Residents Sports Festival, hosted and organized by the Ulleung County Sports Council and sponsored by various local institutions and organizations, concluded successfully at the Ulleung Public Stadium on September 4.
The opening ceremony began with a lively gilnori performance by the Jangheung Nongak Troupe, followed by the energetic entrance of eight teams and an official address by Gong Hosik, President of the Ulleung County Sports Council, marking the official start of the festival.
Next, Jeong Bokseok, former president of the Ulleung County Sports Council and the first elected president, served as the torchbearer, lighting the flame of hope and unity amid enthusiastic applause from the residents.
During the post-ceremony performances, the Ulleung Dokdori Nanta Troupe, comprised of Ulleungdo students, delivered a passionate performance, and a children's Dokdo Volunteer Defense Corps flash mob further heightened the festival atmosphere.
This year’s event was divided into eight preliminary matches and eight main matches, held from August 23 to 30. In the general division, last year’s champions, the Seomyeon and Jeodong teams, shared first place, while the Sadong team finished third. In the workplace division, among seven participating organizations, the 118 Early Warning Squadron took first place, Ulleung Police Station came in second, and Ulleung 119 Safety Center placed third.
Notably, this year’s festival also saw the participation of united teams from five regional hometown associations-Pohang, Gyeonggi, Daegu, Ulsan, and Gumi-who joined local residents in friendly competition and exchange.
Governor Nam Hankwon stated, "I hope this festival goes beyond winning and losing, becoming a celebration of unity where residents cheer for and encourage each other, coming together through healthy effort," adding, "We will continue to fully support the promotion of community sports so that all residents can participate and enjoy."
