The special investigation team stated in a press release that "this morning, we began a search and seizure at the National Education Commission in connection with the case involving suspicions that former National Education Commissioner Lee Baeyong provided precious metals."
Commissioner Lee is suspected of having given a 37.5-gram gold turtle and other items to First Lady Kim early in the Yoon Sukyeol administration in exchange for requesting a personnel appointment. During a previous search and seizure related to the alleged preferential development of the Gongheung District in Yangpyeong by Kim's family, the special investigation team discovered a letter, believed to have been written by Lee to President Yoon and his wife, along with the gold turtle.
The special investigation team had already conducted a search and seizure of Lee's residence and other locations on August 28. On September 1, Lee expressed regret over the situation and tendered his resignation, stepping down from his position.
Meanwhile, on the morning of the 5th, the special investigation team also began a search and seizure at the Presidential Security Service. The team explained that this was to obtain materials necessary for the ongoing investigation.
