Korea Airports Corporation announced on September 5 that it has introduced a "biometric payment service" at the Lotte Duty Free Shop in the international terminal of Gimpo Airport.
The biometric payment service is a payment method that allows customers to purchase duty-free goods simply by recognizing the veins in their hands (palm veins). This improves upon the previous method, which required presenting a passport, boarding pass, and credit card when purchasing duty-free items. By pre-registering palm vein information at the airport and linking a payment card to the Smart Airport application, travelers can use the service.
From February to last month, the corporation designed a biometric authentication application programming interface (API) to link airport users' passport and boarding information. Lotte Duty Free Shop developed and established the biometric payment system for its duty-free stores.
Park Jaehee, Head of Strategic Planning at Korea Airports Corporation, stated, "The biometric payment service will serve as a key example of the corporation's digital transformation. We plan to gradually expand the service to duty-free shops and commercial facilities at major airports such as Gimhae Airport, further strengthening the corporation's global competitiveness."
