Pukyong National University Faculty Startup 'Team Reboot' Wins International AI Competition for Second Consecutive Year

Proving Global Competitiveness with Document Recognition AI Technology
Pilot Implementation of Trade Platform Underway

Team Reboot, a faculty startup from Pukyong National University led by CEO Professor Sungcheol Choi, has won the international artificial intelligence (AI) competition, the 3rd SciCap Challenge, for the second consecutive year.

The team demonstrated the superiority of its document recognition AI technology in this competition, which featured participation from universities and research institutions worldwide.

Team Reboot, founded by Professor Sungcheol Choi of the Department of Systems Management and Safety Engineering at Pukyong National University, secured first place in both the Quality Track and the Quantitative Evaluation Track at this year's event. However, as the rules allow only one track to be awarded, the team ultimately chose to accept the Quality Track victory.

This year's SciCap Challenge was organized by the Conference on Language Modeling (COLM). The competition evaluates how accurately AI can interpret complex visual materials-such as tables, graphs, and images-in scientific papers and generate corresponding captions.

Team Reboot developed a quality evaluator and a caption generator based on the open-source multimodal model 'Qwen-2.5-VL.' The quality evaluator, trained on a synthetic dataset using GPT-4.1, achieved a high agreement score of 0.754. The team also unveiled technology capable of generating personalized captions by learning each author's writing style.

Kim Jaeyoung, Chief AI Officer (CAIO) of Team Reboot, stated, "Processing complex data such as tables and equations in scientific papers requires not just simple caption generation, but a comprehensive understanding of the entire document and extraction of key information." He added, "Through this competition, we confirmed the competitiveness of open-source models."

Team Reboot is currently developing 'askyour.trade 2.0,' a generative AI-based trade platform, with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) as part of the XaaS (Industry as a Service) leading project. This platform automatically recognizes and processes trade documents such as invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin, digitizing the entire process from quotation to customs clearance. Companies including KPPR Resource Bank, KC, ChicHan, and Surf Company are participating as demand partners to validate the platform.

Kim, the CAIO, noted, "The technology for processing structured documents like scientific papers can be directly applied to trade documents or internal corporate documents," adding, "We are currently implementing service deployment in industrial settings through the NIPA XaaS project."
