The National Gwangju Science Museum announced on September 3 that it has been included in the "Top 40 Science Travel Destinations in Korea," selected by the Korea Tourism Organization and Dong-A Science.
The "Top 40 Science Travel Destinations in Korea" is a project aimed at promoting science-themed travel courses. Forty locations were chosen from over 100 institutions through recommendations and voting by 10 experts in the field of science communication.
In the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, six institutions were selected, including the National Gwangju Science Museum, Suncheonman National Garden, Mokpo Natural History Museum, Naro Space Center Space Science Museum, and Haenam Dinosaur Museum. Among the five national science museums across the country, those in the Gwangju, Chungcheong, and metropolitan areas were included.
Located in Buk-gu, Gwangju, the National Gwangju Science Museum operates mainly around exhibitions and hands-on experiences themed on light. The main building, designed to resemble a spaceship, houses exhibition halls featuring interactive displays that engage all five senses. In the Artificial Intelligence Hall and the Children's Science Hall, visitors can explore exhibitions on future sciences such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and space science.
The museum has recently expanded its audience by increasing adult-only programs and offering more free admission days. By introducing ESG management, it is strengthening its public role and is being recognized as a hub for science culture within the local community.
Yoon Wonchan, a researcher at the Public Relations and Cooperation Office, said, "We are proud to have achieved an S grade in the public institution management performance evaluation, ranked as Gwangju's most popular tourist destination for two consecutive years, and now to be selected for this list. We hope that travelers to the Honam region will enjoy a variety of exhibitions, educational, and cultural programs."
