On September 2, Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association (President Lim Chaecheong) announced the launch of an emergency fundraising campaign to secure safe drinking water for residents of Gangneung City, Gangwon Province, following the declaration of a disaster situation due to severe drought.
Gangneung City is experiencing serious disruptions in the supply of household water as the water level at Obong Reservoir, the city's main water source, has dropped below 15% due to record-breaking drought. In response, the government declared a disaster situation at 7:00 p.m. on August 30 and issued a nationwide fire service mobilization order, dispatching fire trucks from across the country as part of an all-government response.
Shin Hoon, Secretary General of Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association, stated, "Water is fundamental to survival and safety itself," and appealed, "We ask for your warm support so that the citizens of Gangneung can overcome this crisis where even the minimum drinking water is lacking."
Prior to this, the association, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, had provided emergency support to Gangneung City, including 20,160 bottles of 500ml bottled water, 29,760 bottles of 2-liter bottled water, and 11,200 bottles of 500ml bottled water donated by Jeju Development Corporation. The association will continue to closely monitor the situation on site and provide additional support upon request from Gangneung City and other relevant organizations.
