Mayor Yuk Donghan: "We Will Expand Welfare Infrastructure and Strengthen Urban Competitiveness"
Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province has been selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Special Situation Area Development program, securing 14 billion won in national funding.
Yook Donghan, mayor of Chuncheon, announced on the 2nd that Chuncheon City has been selected for a new project under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Special Situation Area Development program, securing 14 billion won in national funding. Provided by Chuncheon City.
This project includes the construction of the Dongnam Region Complex Welfare Center and the improvement of the Gongjicheon Bridge design, both of which are expected to play a significant role in promoting balanced regional development and enhancing the city's quality.
At a briefing on the 2nd, Mayor Yook Donghan of Chuncheon stated, "This achievement marks a meaningful first step for the future of Chuncheon," adding, "We will simultaneously expand welfare infrastructure for citizens and strengthen the city's competitiveness."
In the Dongnam region of Chuncheon (Dongnae, Dongsan, and Sindong-myeon), approximately 24,000 people reside, with over 20% of the population aged 65 or older, indicating that the area has entered a super-aged society. However, the absence of welfare facilities for the elderly has caused ongoing inconvenience for residents.
To address this, the city will build a 4,000-square-meter complex welfare center at 876 Hakgok-ri, Dongnae-myeon. The center will have one basement floor and three above-ground floors, and will house a senior welfare center, lifelong learning center, smart library, multipurpose gymnasium, and an all-inclusive care center.
Of the total project cost of 24.6 billion won, 400 million won in national funding will be provided first next year. The project aims for completion in 2028 and opening in 2029.
Additionally, 5 billion won will be invested in improving the design of the Gongjicheon Bridge to enhance the value of the original downtown area. Major bridges such as Gongjicheon Bridge and Hoban Bridge will be targeted, with the goal of strengthening safety and convenience while transforming them into landscape resources befitting the city's stature.
Chuncheon City has also been selected as an excellent institution for two consecutive years in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Special Situation Area Development program evaluation. As a result, the city has secured an incentive of 4.24 billion won, the largest amount ever.
Mayor Yook emphasized, "We will communicate with citizens and pursue municipal administration so that both the Dongnam region and the original downtown can develop together," adding, "We will do our utmost for the balanced development of Chuncheon and the happiness of its citizens."
