Incheon Airport Expands Facial Recognition Departure 'Smart Pass' to All Boarding Gates

On September 2, Incheon International Airport Corporation announced that it has expanded the facial recognition departure service, "Incheon Airport Smart Pass," to all boarding gates at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Incheon Airport.

Smart Pass, which was first introduced at a domestic airport in July 2023, was previously available only at departure halls. Starting today, however, passengers can now pass through both the departure hall and boarding gates using only facial recognition, without having to present their passport or boarding pass. After a pilot program at select boarding gates, the corporation has completed installing Smart Pass devices at all 158 boarding gates in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

However, Smart Pass is currently available only at the boarding gates of 11 airlines that have obtained prior certification: Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, Jin Air, Air Seoul, Jeju Air, Air Premia, Eastar Jet, Asiana Airlines, T'way Air, Cathay Pacific, and EVA Air. In addition, whether Smart Pass is available for specific flights may vary according to each airline's own operating standards, so passengers are advised to check with their airline. The corporation plans to continue discussions with airlines operating at Incheon Airport to expand the number of airlines offering Smart Pass at boarding gates.

To use Smart Pass, passengers must register an account through the dedicated mobile application, "ICN Smart Pass," which includes steps such as facial photography and passport verification. Registration is also possible through linked financial apps, including KB Kookmin Bank, Toss, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, and Hana Bank.

Lee Hakjae, CEO of Incheon International Airport Corporation, stated, "With the expansion of the Smart Pass service to airline boarding gates, we expect passenger convenience to be greatly enhanced. We will continue to improve the service from the passenger's perspective to further increase the convenience of using Smart Pass."
