Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province will host the 8th Jeonju Reading Festival for three days from September 5 to 7 at the Jeonju Hanbyeok Culture Center and the Wanpanbon Culture Center area.
According to the city on September 2, this year's Jeonju Reading Festival, held under the theme "The Moment You Turn the Page," will bring together more than 60 institutions and organizations that make up Jeonju's reading ecosystem. The festival, which maintains its unique identity as a celebration of reading culture, will feature a wide variety of book-related programs designed for all generations to enjoy.
The city has selected four recommended programs for this year's festival to boost citizen participation and interest: a lecture by author Cha Inpyo, the Pyeongsan Bookstore, the Reading Olympics, and "Protect the Annals."
Embracing the theme "The Moment You Turn the Page," the festival aims to provide a blueprint for growth and development through the active engagement of reading, much like discovering a new world with every page turned.
The city has expanded new programs, including reading discussions and workshops led by people in their 20s and 30s, as well as the ongoing Reading Olympics, which is designed to support Jeonju's bid to host the Summer Olympics.
At the same time, to help citizens resonate with this year's theme, "The Moment You Turn the Page," the festival will feature interactive exhibitions. A book market will also be held, open to all ages, with participation from bookstores nationwide that offer unique themes, in addition to children's books.
Furthermore, the city plans to create an environment accessible to socially disadvantaged groups and to continue pursuing an eco-friendly festival shaped by citizen participation.
Additionally, the special lecture series "The Moment You Meet the Author" will feature popular speakers from various fields, reflecting the latest publishing trends and the broad interests of citizens.
Specifically, the lectures will include "Three Habits That Changed His Day" by author Cha Inpyo, "Healing, Mind" by author Ko Eunji, "A Death Class for the Living" by Professor Lee Ho of Jeonbuk National University, and "Writing That Changes and Grows" by author Choi Eunyoung. For the "Jeonju Book of the Year Lecture," authors Kang Kyungsoo, Lee Heeyoung, Kim Soyoung, and Kim Geunhye will give talks.
On the opening day, the Jeonju City Choir will perform a choral concert featuring various songs related to "books." There will also be a puppet show, a reading play, a bubble performance, a juggling show, and a children's taekwondo performance, offering memorable experiences for the whole family.
This year's festival will also include competitions such as a children's reading activity contest, a family reading Golden Bell quiz, and a children's storytelling contest, providing opportunities for participants to grow through reading.
Special exhibitions will include an interactive display where visitors can pick a tag with a book quote to take home as a keyring, a creative poetry contest using the themes "Jeonju Reading Festival" and "The Moment You Turn the Page," and an exhibit where participants express their emotions through drawings and writing on acrylic sculptures.
Park Nammi, Director of the City Library and Lifelong Learning Headquarters, said, "Reading is a guide to inner growth and change, and the Jeonju Reading Festival has grown in step with citizens who love books and reading. This year, with a more mature approach, we aim to create an even richer book festival in September, the season of reading, filled with the breath of citizens who read, write, and create."
