Yangsan Launches "Green City Roadmap"
Paving the Way for an Eco-Friendly Urban Transformation
Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province has officially begun developing its environmental master plan, the "Yangsan Green City Roadmap," marking a shift from its previous image as a city focused on urban development to one centered on eco-friendly and green initiatives.
This roadmap is being promoted under the strong eco-friendly policy commitment of Mayor Na Dongyeon, based on the recognition that the climate crisis poses a serious threat to humanity's survival.
The plan aims to build on the existing statutory environmental plan, the "Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Basic Plan," by introducing more effective and scalable environmental policies.
The roadmap will cover a five-year period from 2026 to 2030 and will be structured around five sectors: climate crisis, ecological environment, living environment, resource circulation, and infrastructure development.
To ensure smooth implementation, the city has formed a cross-departmental task force led by the Director of the Environmental and Greenery Bureau. The task force will establish a cooperative framework by selecting key departments such as the Climate Environment Division, Corporate Support Division, Water Quality Management Division, Parks Division, and Rivers Division.
In particular, the city plans to designate a lead department for each sector to enhance expertise and efficiency. In addition, to minimize the burden and trial-and-error associated with developing new policies, the city will actively benchmark exemplary cases from both Korea and abroad.
The implementation schedule includes the completion of the first draft report by the end of September, followed by an interim briefing, and a final briefing in mid to late October. Ultimately, the city aims to mark the beginning of its new urban image with a (tentatively named) "Yangsan Green City Vision Proclamation Ceremony" with citizens at the end of February 2026.
Alongside the development of this roadmap, the city will incorporate environmental perspectives into all aspects of municipal administration. For example, environmental factors will be included in the city's master plan, eco-friendly features such as solar power will be applied to new public buildings, the use of disposable products will be minimized at festivals and events, and a new "Environmental Impact Assessment" section will be added to related business plans.
A city official stated, "This Green City Roadmap will serve as a turning point in transforming Yangsan's urban image," adding, "We will accelerate the realization of a green city in Yangsan through practical environmental policies that all citizens can truly experience."
