The project "Time Zone Protocols" by the artist collective Black Quantum Futurism opened at the Leeum Museum of Art on September 1. The opening event was attended by key figures from the arts and culture community, including Claus Oldager, CEO of Chanel Korea, and Kim Sungwon, Deputy Director of Leeum Museum of Art. As part of the opening, Black Quantum Futurism presented a special performance titled "Collapsed Time and Drifting Lines." The performance delved deeply into the concepts of time and clocks, as well as the political issues inherent in science fiction literature, through forms such as improvisational sound, recitation, and ritualistic incantations. The performance, in which the words and sounds of the two artists intertwined, created a unique "temporal ritual" where multiple voices converged into one.

Black Quantum Futurism is an interdisciplinary artistic practice co-founded by Camae Ayewa (recipient of the 2024 Chanel Next Prize) and Rasheedah Phillips. Their work intersects quantum physics, the temporal experiences of the Black diaspora, and indigenous African concepts of time to envision alternative temporal politics. They critically analyze how the time systems established by colonialism and capitalism have impacted the temporal autonomy and memory formation of Black communities, and continue their collaboration through various experimental formats, including performance, installation, music, writing, and community projects. "Time Zone Protocols" is a project that rewrites existing protocols (norms) for defining time, re-maps time zones, and critically deconstructs the system of world standard time created by imperialism.

In connection with the project, the "Prime Meridian Unconference" will be held from September 4 to 6. This conference will feature lectures, workshops, and performances exploring time, space, and alternative futures. Scholars and artists from Korea and abroad, including Camae Ayewa and Rasheedah Phillips, will participate to connect perspectives on Asian temporality and Black Quantum Futurism, seeking alternative futures against the backdrop of the city of Seoul. Advance registration is available through the Leeum Museum of Art website, and all events are free of charge.
