Balmulshelter in Uijeongbu Transformed into Cultural Space... Returned to Citizens

Restored Balmulshelter Welcomes Citizens
with Culture and the Arts After Overcoming Two Hardships

Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced on September 1 that it had swiftly restored the Balmulshelter along the Jungal Stream, which suffered significant damage from heavy rainfall, and newly transformed it into a healing space where nature and culture coexist.

This restoration went beyond simply returning the area to its original state; it aimed to expand the function of Balmulshelter into an open space where citizens can enjoy both relaxation and the arts. After promptly completing environmental clean-up and facility repairs, the city attracted citizens back to the site through cultural events.

On August 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the 'Art Link Culture Recharge Healing Performance,' organized by the Uijeongbu Arts Cooperative, was held at Balmulshelter. The program featured a five-color Korean traditional music concert by the Obitnarae Korean Music Ensemble, an ocarina ensemble and tenor solo by the Sopungganeungil Team, a creative play by the Salpan Cooperative, and a street dance performance by All Day Korea. The event was met with enthusiastic response from citizens of all ages.

Notably, the performances were not a one-time event but continued at the same location on August 30 and 31. The additional shows included a traditional percussion performance by Majunuri, the Majubuknori, and a pansori piece, 'Sarangga' from Chunhyangga, by the Arirang Gugak Institute, among other diverse acts. Balmulshelter has now established itself as a venue for cultural exchange where artists and citizens come together in nature.

The city hopes that through this series of performances, Balmulshelter will serve not only as a restored stream area but also as a symbolic space for local arts and community recovery. Uijeongbu City plans to further expand its potential as a 'model of recovery and healing' where culture, environment, and citizens unite.

Mayor Kim Donggeun stated, "It is very meaningful that the riverside area, which was damaged by heavy rainfall, has been returned to the citizens thanks to your interest and cooperation," adding, "We will promptly complete the removal of floating debris and facility maintenance within the stream to create a more pleasant and safe river environment."
