Minister Choi Hwiyoung Meets Arts Association Leaders: "Will Strengthen the Power of Culture and Arts"

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that on September 1, Minister Choi Hwiyoung met with the heads of associations and organizations representing various art sectors-including music, theater, dance, literature, and visual arts-at the Kensington Hotel Yeouido in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. During the meeting, he listened to voices from the field and discussed strategies for sustainable development and support measures for the arts sector.


This meeting, organized to strengthen communication and cooperation between the government and the arts community, was attended by Kim Pyungsoo, Chairman of the Korean Federation of Cultural and Artistic Organizations, Lee Dongyeon, Co-Representative of Culture Solidarity, as well as representatives from each sector: in music, Lee Cheolgu, President of the Korean Music Association, and Lim Woongsoo, Vice President of the Gugak Promotion Association; in theater, Lim Daeil, President of the Korean Theater Actors Association; in dance, Kim Hyungnam, President of the Korean Contemporary Dance Association, and Cho Namgyu, President of the Korean Dance Association; in literature, Kang Hyungcheol, President of the Korean Writers’ Association, Kim Jonghoe, President of the Korean Literature Museum Association, and Kim Howoon, President of the Korean Writers’ Association; and in visual arts, Kwon Chigyu, President of the Korean Sculptors Association.

The participants engaged in wide-ranging discussions on topics such as improving the creative environment for artists, revitalizing local art ecosystems, expanding international exchanges, and ensuring the sustainability of arts organizations. By sector: in music, they proposed strengthening the connection between performing arts and the tourism industry, improving the public contest system, creating job opportunities for young Gugak musicians, and establishing overseas hubs for K-Content; in theater, they called for support policies not only for existing creation and production but also specifically for theater actors; in dance, they emphasized the need to establish a National Dance Center, enact the Dance Promotion Act, and ensure fair evaluation and operation of support projects; in literature, they suggested organizing Korea-China-Japan literary conferences, adopting a long-term approach to foundational arts, restructuring projects to focus on readers, and redefining the role of the National Literature Museum to be more participatory; and in visual arts, they proposed improving the system for art in architecture and creating jobs through the maintenance of public art.


Additionally, the participants requested active government support for key issues in the arts sector, including expanding public-private cooperation in cultural and arts policy and enhancing welfare for artists.


Minister Choi Hwiyoung stated, "My mission is not only to enhance the industrial value of the cultural industry, but also to strengthen the cultural and artistic foundation that underpins popular culture and to establish a rich and robust base for sustainable growth. Moving forward, I will continue to develop alternatives and implement policies based on voices from the field."
