The Environment and Welfare Committee of the Gwangju City Council, chaired by Choi Ji-hyun, visited the Gwangju SRF (Solid Refuse Fuel) facility on September 1 to directly inspect the overall operation in response to ongoing odor complaints. The committee urged the development of fundamental improvement measures.

The site visit included not only members of the Environment and Welfare Committee but also officials from the Gwangju City Climate and Environment Bureau. They inspected both the SRF facility and the regional sanitary landfill. At the regional sanitary landfill, they focused on examining countermeasures for climate crisis situations, especially since flooding issues have emerged during periods of heavy rainfall.

During the inspection, the committee thoroughly discussed several issues: the fundamental causes of odor generation at the SRF facility; whether there was any negligence in management and supervision; the health impacts on nearby residents; and comprehensive solutions, including responses to the climate crisis.

The committee pointed out that, despite odor complaints being repeatedly raised for years and seriously threatening residents' daily lives, no fundamental improvements have been made. Through this visit, they directly confirmed the urgency of resolving the complaints and the limitations of on-site responses, and called for the establishment of strong countermeasures.

Chairperson Choi Ji-hyun stated, "The odor problem and the multiple issues caused by heavy rainfall are not just inconveniences but serious environmental problems that threaten the quality of life for residents. The city council will take the lead in pressing for a resolution to these problems until the end and will also work to establish institutional measures."

Meanwhile, the Environment and Welfare Committee plans to continue actively addressing issues directly related to citizens' lives by conducting thorough on-site inspections and making effective policy proposals that citizens can truly feel.
