Search and Seizure Targeting Southern Waterworks Office and Subcontractors

The government is conducting a search and seizure operation on September 1 in connection with the manhole suffocation accident in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, where two workers died.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that on this day, it had deployed 21 labor inspectors to carry out search and seizure operations at the Southern Waterworks Office, the headquarters and field offices of subcontractors, and other related locations in connection with the manhole suffocation accident in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.


The Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office plans to secure materials related to construction contracts and payment, PCs, and mobile phones of those involved, and to investigate the causes of the suffocation accident, as well as whether health and safety regulations were followed during work in the confined space inside the manhole.


The Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office stated, "Based on the evidence obtained through this search and seizure, we will conduct a rigorous and swift investigation into possible violations of the Industrial Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act."


On July 27, a fatal accident occurred in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, where two workers suffocated and died inside a manhole on the road-one worker who entered the manhole to check for a water leak and another worker who tried to rescue him.
