KIOST Leads the Training of Marine Experts in Indonesia

Performance Report on the Operation of the Korea-Indonesia Integrated Marine Fisheries Technology Education Center

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (President Lee Heeseung, KIOST) held the "Korea-Indonesia Integrated Marine Fisheries Technology Education Center Establishment and Capacity Building ODA Project Performance Report" on August 26, 2025, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The event was attended by a total of 50 representatives from government agencies and universities of both countries, including Hansan Park, Director of the Korea-Indonesia Marine Science Joint Research Center (MTCRC), and Dandy Satria Iswara, Deputy Minister for Marine Resources Coordination at the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs. Participants shared the achievements of marine science cooperation between Korea and Indonesia and explored future directions for development.

This project, supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, aims to establish the Korea-Indonesia Integrated Marine Fisheries Technology Education Center (KIOTEC) and foster master's and doctoral-level marine experts. KIOST serves as the lead institution, with Pukyong National University participating in the project.

Notably, the project was officially approved as a United Nations Ocean Decade (2021-2030) project in March 2025, receiving international recognition for its status and influence.

Hansan Park, Director of MTCRC, stated, "Based on Korea's marine science and technology, this project is expected to help Korea and Indonesia become a global hub for marine science and technology to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

Dandy Satria Iswara, Deputy Minister for Marine Resources Coordination at the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, emphasized, "Strengthening the capacity of marine professionals is a crucial investment not only for future academic research but also for the development of science-based policies," adding, "We are especially grateful for the continued support from the Korean government."

Shofia Karima, a student at Bandung Institute of Technology participating in the master's scholarship program, shared, "Through the KIOTEC master's professional training program, I was able to directly learn Korea's advanced marine science and technology and broaden my horizons. I hope to continue my academic growth by pursuing a doctoral program in Korea in the future."

The MTCRC, established in September 2018 to promote cooperation in marine science and technology between Korea and Indonesia and now marking its seventh anniversary, is an intergovernmental joint research center founded through a memorandum of understanding and implementation agreement between Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs (now the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs).

The center has been identifying and conducting joint research projects that are practically needed in Indonesia, such as marine satellites, blue carbon, and marine energy.

KIOST plans to continue developing and operating concrete capacity-building programs related to the marine sector and further strengthen the cooperative relationship in marine science and technology between the two countries.
