Gyeonggi Province Eases Reward Criteria for “Climate Action Opportunity Income” for Seniors Aged 70 and Above

Starting September 1, Gyeonggi Province will ease the reward criteria and increase the amount for the “walking” activity, which is part of the climate action opportunity income program for seniors aged 70 and above.

Gyeonggi Province will first lower the daily step requirement for climate action rewards from 8,000 steps to 5,000 steps. In addition, the reward amount will be increased from 200 won to 300 won per day, and the monthly maximum will be raised from 4,000 won to 6,000 won.

The climate action opportunity income is a Gyeonggi Province policy that provides rewards to participants who practice carbon reduction activities in their daily lives. Any Gyeonggi resident aged 7 or older can participate. However, Gyeonggi Province has decided to relax the criteria for the “walking” activity and enhance the rewards for seniors, considering that the elderly face higher barriers to participation due to factors such as health, physical fitness, and digital accessibility, making it difficult for them to engage in various activities.

Additionally, to assist seniors who find it difficult to use the climate action app, the province will implement an “on-site climate action opportunity income app education program” at senior welfare centers.

The Carbon Neutrality Support Center’s citizen task force, composed of residents engaged in promoting carbon neutrality, will visit city and county senior welfare centers and senior community centers to provide education on climate change and carbon neutrality, as well as guidance on installing and using the app.

This educational program has already been conducted 178 times at 94 senior welfare facilities across 22 cities and counties as of the end of July.

Byun Sangki, Director of Climate and Environment Policy at Gyeonggi Province, stated, “Easing the reward criteria for the ‘walking’ activity for seniors and providing on-site education at senior welfare centers will lower the barriers to participation for digitally vulnerable elderly residents. We will continue to expand opportunities for all generations in the province to participate in greenhouse gas reduction activities and respond to the climate crisis.”
