Gyeonggi Province will launch a pilot transportation expense support program for seniors aged 70 and over, aiming to reduce their transportation costs and encourage the use of public transportation.
Transportation Expense Support Program for Seniors Aged 70 and Over (Dongducheon City). Provided by Gyeonggi Province
This program will first be implemented in Icheon City, Dongducheon City, and Yangpyeong County. In addition to the existing G-PASS card, which provides free subway rides for seniors, the program will reimburse fares for local buses, GTX, and other metropolitan transportation options through local currency or cash.
The province will reimburse transportation expenses of up to 240,000 won per year for all residents aged 70 and over, regardless of income or age. For seniors who do not hold a driver's license, an additional incentive will be provided, allowing them to receive up to 360,000 won per year in transportation reimbursements.
Seniors who wish to apply for the program can do so in person at their local administrative welfare centers in each city, county, or district starting September 1. Required documents include an ID, G-PASS card (preferential transportation card), and either a local currency card or a copy of a bank account under the applicant's name. Due to the expected high volume of applicants in September, applications will be accepted sequentially based on the last digit of the applicant's birth year (1 or 6 - Monday, 2 or 7 - Tuesday, 3 or 8 - Wednesday, 4 or 9 - Thursday, 5 or 0 - Friday). From October onward, applications can be submitted regardless of birth year.
The reimbursement will apply to transportation expenses incurred from the fourth quarter of 2025 (October to December), and payments will be made quarterly starting from the first quarter of 2026. Detailed application instructions are available at local administrative welfare centers in each city, county, or district.
The province plans to closely analyze senior satisfaction, required funding, and areas for system improvement during the pilot phase to determine the direction for expanding the program.
Yoon Taewan, Director of Metropolitan Transportation Policy at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This transportation expense support program for seniors is a welfare policy aimed at guaranteeing mobility rights for the elderly and promoting the use of public transportation. We will continue to implement transportation support policies that reduce the financial burden and improve convenience for transportation-vulnerable groups, including seniors."
