On August 30 (local time), the British daily The Guardian and other foreign media outlets reported that Ramsay posted on his social media that he "received treatment to remove basal cell carcinoma," along with a photo showing a bandage under his ear. Ramsay expressed his gratitude to the medical staff for their prompt response and urged, "Everyone, make sure to apply sunscreen this weekend."
According to the UK's National Health Service (NHS), basal cell carcinoma occurs in the outermost layer of the skin, making it possible to detect the cancer early. The main cause of basal cell carcinoma is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays. Typical symptoms include lumps or spots appearing on the skin. It mainly occurs in areas frequently exposed to UV rays, such as the face, neck, shoulders, hands, back, and legs. While basal cell carcinoma is not considered highly life-threatening, it often develops on the face, where it can continuously destroy tissue and may invade the subcutaneous layer, muscles, or bones.
Treatment for basal cell carcinoma depends on factors such as the location of the lesion, tissue subtype, and whether the cancer has recurred. In principle, surgical excision is the primary method. If the lesion is small, it is removed and primary closure is performed. For moderate or larger lesions, if the excision area is extensive, skin defects are reconstructed using surrounding tissue or through skin grafting. The recurrence rate after surgical excision is known to be around 5.3%.
The likelihood of metastasis for basal cell carcinoma is very low, estimated at about 0.0028% to 0.55%. However, once metastasis occurs, the average survival period is about 8 to 10 months. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation in the United States, basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, affecting approximately 3.6 million Americans each year.
The NHS recommends avoiding sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., the hottest hours of the day, covering arms and legs, and thoroughly applying sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to all exposed areas, including the face, ears, and neck.
Gordon Ramsay is a star chef representing the United Kingdom, gaining widespread popularity through appearances on various shows such as Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares. In particular, he drew attention for his "devilish" persona in the reality program Hell's Kitchen, where he is known for harsh words and blunt criticism toward competing chefs. In 1997, he opened Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, London, and has operated it for about 27 years. The restaurant received three stars from the Michelin Guide in 2001, four years after opening, and has maintained this rating ever since.
