Academic Conference, Exhibitions, and Public Lectures
Commemorating 80 Years of Liberation
Exploring Heritage Preservation and Independence Movement History
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage announced on September 1 that it will hold a commemorative event with the public to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation. Under the theme "80 Years of Liberation and Cultural Heritage: A Brilliant Journey," an academic conference, exhibitions, hands-on experiences, and public lectures will be held for two weeks starting from September 10.
The academic conference, to be held at the auditorium of the National Palace Museum of Korea, will review major archaeological sites excavated during the Japanese colonial period and reflect on the trends in architectural heritage preservation after liberation. Exhibitions and hands-on activities will take place at Deokhongjeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace. The preservation process of modern and contemporary cultural heritage related to the independence movement will be introduced through videos and photographs, and children will be introduced to the draft of the Provisional Government's founding platform and the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag).
A variety of public participation events will also be held. In Gyeongju, a lecture titled "Tourism in Gyeongju During the Japanese Colonial Period and the Maintenance of the Ancient Capital" will take place, and at Dondeokjeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace, the portrait and photographs of independence activist Hwang Hyeon will be displayed. At the National Palace Museum of Korea, a public lecture will be held on the excavation and restoration of Heungbokjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace. Detailed schedules and application information can be found on the website and social media channels of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage.
