Yangcheon District Launches Education and Healing Programs for Dementia Patient Families

Reducing the Burden of Dementia Care
and Strengthening Emotional Support

Yangcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced on August 31 that it will operate customized support programs throughout September for families and caregivers of dementia patients in recognition of Dementia Awareness Day (September 21). The program consists of a variety of activities, including education, healing, and outings, all designed to reduce the burden of caregiving and expand emotional support.

The dementia family education program, "Hope Diary," will be held nine times in total, every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. from September 2 to September 30, at the Family Cafe on the 5th floor of the Yangcheon District Dementia Relief Center. The program provides practical education on understanding dementia, stress management, and guidance on the role of caregivers, helping families alleviate the challenges of caregiving.


Starting September 5, the dementia family healing program "Piona" will take place every Friday at 2 p.m., continuing until November 14. The program supports emotional healing for caregivers through music classes, ensemble sessions, songwriting, and musical theater experiences.


On September 19, ten families of dementia patients will participate in the "Dementia Awareness Day Commemorative Event" held at Seoul City Hall Plaza, where they will enjoy cultural performances and experience promotional booths, fostering friendship and creating memories. In addition, a variety of ongoing programs for families of dementia patients are offered, including art, forest experiences, and urban gardening.


The Yangcheon District Dementia Relief Center provides a wide range of dementia support services, including customized case management, cognitive screening tests, mobile dementia checkups, provision of care supplies, and awareness campaigns. Last year, the center was recognized as an exemplary district by being selected as an outstanding institution in the "Seoul Dementia Management Project Evaluation."


Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, stated, "I hope this program provides valuable information and warm comfort to families caring for dementia patients," adding, "We will continue to strengthen community-based care systems so that both dementia patients and their families can live in our city with peace of mind."
