A study has found that the age group most significantly impacted by the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is young adults aged 22 to 25.

On August 28 (local time), CNBC in the United States reported, citing research conducted at Stanford University, that among workers in occupations highly exposed to AI technology-such as customer service, accounting, and software development-the employment rate for those aged 22 to 25 dropped by 13% since 2022, making them the most affected group.

Employment Rates Rise in Jobs With Low AI Exposure

The study analyzed data from Automatic Data Processing (ADP), the largest employment information company in the United States. However, the paper added that the impact of AI advancement does not affect all occupations. For example, in jobs with low AI exposure, such as nursing assistants, employment rates either remained stable or increased across all age groups. Notably, jobs for young nursing assistants grew at a faster rate than those for older workers.

The study stated that the use of AI itself does not immediately lead to a decrease in employment. In occupations where AI is used as a tool to enhance and supplement work efficiency, changes in employment rates were minimal.

The study explained, "This is large-scale, early evidence consistent with the hypothesis that the AI revolution in the U.S. labor market is beginning to have significant and uneven effects on entry-level workers." The researchers interpreted the results by saying, "AI can replace knowledge and learning that can be acquired through formal education, making younger people particularly vulnerable."

CNBC explained, "While there have been concerns about the potential impact of AI on the job market across all industries and age groups, this study shows that the results are not uniform."
