More Than 500 Athletes from 33 Countries to Compete
Iksan to Host Prestigious Wheelchair Fencing Championships
Iksan City in North Jeolla Province will host the "2025 Iksan World Wheelchair Fencing Championships" for six days from September 2 to 7 at the Iksan Indoor Gymnasium.
According to the city on August 29, this event is organized by the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation and co-hosted by the Korea Wheelchair Fencing Association and the Iksan Disabled Sports Association. More than 500 athletes from 33 countries around the world are expected to participate.
Above all, as this event offers qualification spots for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games and is the most prestigious competition after the Paralympics in terms of ranking points, it is drawing significant attention from the global wheelchair fencing community.
The championships will begin on September 2 with the ?p?e and sabre events. The official opening ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on September 3, marking the formal start of the competition. Preliminary and final rounds for men's and women's foil, sabre, and ?p?e will follow, with the team events on September 7 concluding the intense six-day tournament.
This event is expected to serve as a turning point for Iksan City to establish itself as a hub for international disabled sports. It is seen as a valuable opportunity to showcase the excellence of the region's sports infrastructure, the spontaneous welcoming culture of its citizens, and Iksan's reputation as an inclusive city to the world.
Kim Wankil, president of the Korea Wheelchair Fencing Association, said, "I would like to thank everyone involved for bringing and preparing this event despite challenging circumstances. I hope this championship will give athletes the confidence to perform at their best on the world stage."
Jung Heonyul, who serves as both the mayor of Iksan and the president of the Iksan Disabled Sports Association, stated, "The sweat and dedication of athletes from around the world gathered in Iksan will be a source of great inspiration for everyone. I hope this event will serve as a catalyst for Iksan to further grow as a city of international sports diplomacy."
