First Groundbreaking for 40 Non-Supplied Households
A Testbed for Balanced Development in Energy Welfare
Uiseong County in Gyeongbuk is accelerating improvements to its living infrastructure by breaking ground on the 'City Gas Supply Support Project for Non-Supplied Areas' to increase the city gas supply rate.
On August 29, the county announced plans to lay a 550-meter supply pipeline along Jungri-gil and Hujuk 1-gil in Uiseong-eup starting from September 2, with the goal of providing city gas to 40 households. A total of 2.03 billion won will be invested in this project.
◆ National Average 83% vs. Uiseong County at 41% Currently
The city gas supply rate in Uiseong County stands at 41%, which is about half the national average of approximately 83%. The main reasons cited are geographical conditions and low population density. In fact, while the supply rate in major cities within Daegu and Gyeongbuk exceeds 80%, many county-level areas remain at the 30% to 50% level.
From 2016 to 2024, Uiseong County invested 4.3 billion won to build a 12-kilometer pipeline network, supplying city gas to 2,727 households. Nevertheless, more than half of the county's residents still rely on LPG or kerosene.
◆ Achieving Both Residential Stability and Environmental Benefits
Expanding city gas supply is expected to not only reduce heating costs and improve safety but also provide environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In Uiseong, where the elderly population is high, easing the burden of fuel costs is directly linked to residents' perceived welfare. A county official emphasized, "City gas is more than just an energy supply; it plays a significant role in improving living standards and the local environment."
◆ The Next Five Years: Expanding Rural Energy Infrastructure Is Key
With this groundbreaking, Uiseong County plans to gradually address areas not yet supplied with city gas. The county has set a goal to raise the supply rate to over 50% within the next five years through additional pipeline construction and investment in related facilities. However, securing the sustainability of the project amid population decline and budget constraints remains a challenge.
Kim Jusu, Governor of Uiseong County, stated, "Expanding city gas supply is a core infrastructure project that enhances the quality of life for our residents. We will continue to do our utmost to attract government support and private sector cooperation so that every resident can use safe and affordable energy."
