No Damage Reported Thanks to City’s Proactive Response
Collaboration Between Citizens and Organizations Ensures Safety
Gyeryong City in South Chungcheong Province has established itself as a model city for responding to natural disasters during the summer, as not a single case of damage was reported this summer despite record-breaking heatwaves and heavy rainfall.
According to the city on August 28, Gyeryong City established a comprehensive natural disaster response plan early on in preparation for heavy rainfall and other events, and operated a 24-hour situation management system centered around the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
The city conducted preemptive inspections of areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall to eliminate risk factors, while on-site response teams and the volunteer disaster prevention corps in each district and neighborhood worked swiftly to prevent damage.

In particular, by completing dredging work on major drainage channels before the rainy season began in earnest, the city significantly reduced the risk of flooding. To address heatwaves, the city eased the urban heat island effect by installing heat relief shelters and shade canopies, and operating water-spraying vehicles on the roads.
Additionally, tailored measures for vulnerable groups, such as providing cooling supplies and health management services, also proved effective.
Mayor Lee Eungwoo stated, "The fact that there was not a single incident of damage is the result of organic cooperation among all departments, the volunteer disaster prevention corps, related organizations, and citizens," adding, "We will continue to build a safe city through thorough preparation and swift response."
Meanwhile, based on these achievements, the city plans to further strengthen its ongoing inspections and preventive activities to ensure the protection of citizens' lives and property.
