The "2025 Builgyeong Civil Engineering Convention," hosted by the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Branch of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, kicked off on the morning of August 28 at Dong-A University’s Bumin Campus.
This event, held under the theme "A Sustainable Future for Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam," is a comprehensive academic festival attended by over 600 local construction experts and university students.
The convention serves as a platform for industry, academia, and research experts with experience in addressing issues such as ground subsidence to share innovative technologies and research achievements, and to explore sustainable development strategies for the Builgyeong region.
The opening keynote speech was delivered by Park Hyungjoon, Mayor of Busan. Focusing on the "15-Minute City" concept, Mayor Park introduced its vision and implementation strategies, stating, "For Busan to rise as a global hub city, infrastructure investments such as the creation of a 15-Minute City, the early opening of the new Gadeokdo Airport, the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Line railway, and the construction of a Nakdong River crossing bridge are essential." He added, "The research and technical support provided by the society are a strong driving force for regional development."
Following this, Song Sanggeun, President of Busan Port Authority, gave a lecture titled "Busan Port: Dreaming of the Sea with Youth," and Cho Sungmin, Director of Research at Korea Expressway Corporation, spoke on "Sustainable Roads Through Digital Innovation." The breakout sessions will focus on topics such as urban safety and ground subsidence, high-level radioactive waste facilities, road infrastructure, and coastal and marine development technologies.
A diverse range of programs is also available for the 2030 generation. Park Dohyun, Head of Equinor Korea, a global offshore wind power company from Norway, will offer a special employment lecture. Additional activities for local university students include career and employment seminars, a civil engineering quiz competition, and a creative integrated design contest. A corporate fair featuring 11 local companies will also be held, providing students with on-site counseling opportunities.
This civil engineering convention serves as a venue for sharing the latest trends and future strategies in the regional construction industry, while also facilitating exchanges between young talent and companies.
