According to Hyundai Motor Company on August 28, a user active under the name "Shane Barrett" recently shared his personal experience of a traffic accident on social media. He reported that a pickup truck crashed into the Ioniq 5 at high speed, but all family members in the car, except for minor scrapes, suffered no serious injuries. In his post, he wrote, "We were in a major accident, but the Ioniq 5 did its job and kept my family safe, especially my 18-month-old twins who were seated in the back."

The photos he released with the post show the Ioniq 5 with its rear end damaged from the accident, as well as the other pickup truck involved. Despite the rear bumper and trunk of the Ioniq 5 being severely crumpled and damaged from the impact, the passenger compartment and the child seats installed in the back remained intact.

The Ioniq 5, built on Hyundai's dedicated E-GMP electric vehicle platform, is designed to intentionally deform its frame in a rear-end collision to absorb the impact. At the same time, the lower body is reinforced with high-strength steel to prevent deformation of the interior safety zone and damage to the battery.

The safety performance of the Ioniq 5 was recognized as top-tier when it received the "Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+)" rating in a crash test announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States in March of this year.

The safety of Hyundai Motor Group vehicles has been proven in the past through incidents where passengers were protected in unexpected accidents. In 2021, professional golfer Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover accident while driving a Genesis GV80 provided for the Genesis Invitational golf tournament, resulting in leg injuries. The police investigating the scene reported that while the front of the vehicle and the bumper were completely destroyed, the interior remained largely intact.

In December 2022, it was reported via social media and local news that a couple riding in a Hyundai Avante N survived a 91-meter fall down a canyon in the United States without serious injury. In May of the same year, Czech ice hockey player Jaromir Jagr was involved in an accident when his EV6 collided with a tram while driving, but he left the vehicle with only a minor injury to one hand, surprising those nearby.
