Post on Social Media Three Hours Before Summit
Mentions "It Looks Like a Purge or Revolution Is Taking Place in South Korea"
The Office of the President announced on the 25th (local time) that it would work to quickly assess the situation regarding a social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he remarked that it appears a "purge" or "revolution" is taking place in South Korea. President Lee Jaemyung is scheduled to hold a summit meeting and luncheon with President Trump at the White House on this day.
On this day, President Trump posted on Truth Social, "What is happening in South Korea?" and shared a message to that effect. President Trump further stated, "We cannot do business there (in South Korea) under these circumstances," and added, "Today I will meet the new president (President Lee Jaemyung) at the White House. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
President Trump's remarks came about three hours before the South Korea-U.S. summit. This is the first time President Trump has made a public statement regarding the summit. Observers believe that the "purge" and "revolution" mentioned by President Trump on social media refer to special investigations and trials involving former President Yoon Sukyeol and other government officials.
In response, Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Office of the President, held a briefing at the press center set up in Washington, D.C., stating, "There is a lot of fake news circulating," and added, "We will verify the situation."
Meanwhile, on this day, President Lee will hold a summit and luncheon with President Trump at the White House. Afterwards, he is scheduled to attend a business roundtable with South Korean and U.S. business leaders. President Lee will also deliver a policy speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), followed by a dinner meeting with American opinion leaders.
