Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province is set to expand its large-scale water infrastructure to transform the agricultural sector.

On August 25, the county announced that the areas of Guyam-myeon and Jangam-myeon have been selected as new districts for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' "Paddy Field Multipurpose Water Supply System Construction Project" for 2025, securing a total project budget of 43.5 billion won (34.9 billion won in national funds and 8.6 billion won in local funds).

This project aims to establish a system that supplies clean and clear agricultural water by purifying raw water drawn from the Geum River.

Through this initiative, the county expects to reduce the use of groundwater with excessive iron content and resolve water shortages that occur during winter, fundamentally improving the growing environment for greenhouse crops.

The Guyam and Jangam areas are already major production centers for high-value horticultural crops such as watermelon and melon, and have established nationwide competitiveness.

However, the region has consistently faced issues with groundwater containing high levels of iron and seasonal water shortages.

Through this project, the county plans to newly construct key infrastructure such as pumping stations, pressurization stations, water purification plants, and pipelines, ensuring a stable supply of clean water throughout all four seasons to 490 hectares of farmland.

Park Junghyun, Governor of Buyeo County, stated, "Securing this national funding will serve as a major turning point, not just by reinforcing basic infrastructure, but by fundamentally improving the structure of Buyeo's agriculture. We will accelerate our efforts to expand water management infrastructure so that farmers can focus on their work with peace of mind."

Meanwhile, in addition to this project, the county continues to push forward with initiatives such as the Hyeonam District Multipurpose Rural Water Development Project, the Bansan District Rural Water Utilization System Reorganization, and drainage improvement projects, concentrating administrative resources on establishing a stable farming foundation in response to the climate crisis.
