The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced on August 25 that it held a Technology Management Forum under the theme "AI, Industrial Transformation, and the Role of GIST."
The forum, held on the afternoon of August 22 at the Topaz Hall in Seoul's EL Tower, was organized to discuss the importance of industrial transformation and technology management in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), and to bring together experts from industry, academia, and policy sectors to seek future response strategies.
The forum was moderated by President Lim Ki Cheol, with keynote presentations delivered by Kwak Jae Won, Distinguished Professor at GIST Graduate School of AI Policy and Strategy (Editorial Director at Aju Business Daily), Lee Min Hyung, Senior Research Fellow at the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), and Kim Tae Kyun, Professor at the School of Business Administration at Chungnam National University.
Panelists included Kim Young Seop, CEO of Web Economy, Kim Jin Ho, Professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering at GIST, and Cho Young Sang, Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Yonsei University.
The event featured diverse discussions on topics such as AI-based industrial restructuring and securing technological sovereignty, corporate strategies in the era of Physical AI, and designing sustainability for regional ecosystems. Participants shared views on the role of technology management in supporting industrial transformation and regional innovation in the AI era.
Lee Min Hyung, Senior Research Fellow at STEPI, emphasized, "In order to respond to the era of technological hegemony, it is essential to restructure existing industries based on AI and secure technological sovereignty within the technology ecosystem."
Kim Tae Kyun, Professor at Chungnam National University, stated, "In the era of Physical AI, strengthening AI capabilities that can join the humanoid robot platform ecosystem is the core of corporate strategy."
President Lim Ki Cheol said, "AI is not just a simple technology; it is a core competency that drives industrial transformation and the securing of technological sovereignty. Technology management is a strategic tool that connects this competency to the regional economy and the global future."He added, "With its foundation in AI education and research, as well as a platform for disseminating research outcomes through startups and technology commercialization, GIST will invigorate the advanced industrial ecosystem in Gwangju and Jeonnam and accelerate regional innovation."
