Kim Jusu Emphasizes Ongoing Mutual Growth Programs
with Young People in Uiseong
Uiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province has joined forces with young people to support farms struggling due to wildfire damage.
Korea University students visited the affected areas for five days and four nights, helping local farmers and experiencing the region firsthand, thereby embodying the values of disaster recovery and mutual growth.
On August 23, Uiseong County announced that it had held the "Wildfire-Affected Area University Student Voluntour" from August 19 to 23, organized by the Uiseong County Volunteer Center.
This event was operated in cooperation with the Uiseong County Youth Center and Hero Co., Ltd.
"Voluntour" (Volunteer+Tour) is an experiential program that combines volunteering with travel.
In the mornings, students worked up a sweat by helping wildfire-affected farms with tasks such as harvesting peppers and sorting seed garlic, alleviating the labor shortage.
In the afternoons, they visited local attractions such as the Angye Happiness Platform, Youth Growth Center, Angye Art Museum, Jomunguk Museum, and Gounsa Temple, directly experiencing youth activities in the region. They also participated in traditional activities like making a haengnang (traditional travel pouch), learning about local culture and the spirit of community.
The participating Korea University students said, "We were able to share hope with residents while experiencing both the value of volunteering and the joy of travel," adding, "The most meaningful part was knowing that we could contribute, even a little, to the disaster recovery process."
Kim Jusu, Governor of Uiseong County, stated, "The warm support of university students has brought comfort and hope to the affected farms, and it has been a valuable time for students to learn the values of sharing and solidarity. We will continue to offer various programs so that young people visiting Uiseong can grow together with the local community."
