At Daehakro Naon Theater Until August 31
The theater company Moonjibang is staging its original play "Celebration Cake" at Daehakro Naon Theater until August 31.
The play begins with a conflict between Woo-seok, a son who returns home with a cake for his mother's birthday, and his father Lee Baekmoon, who is engrossed in drinking. The actors' rough and direct Busan dialect adds humor to the performance, which ultimately reflects on the meaning of family.
Park Hanbyul, the representative of Moonjibang, is both the writer and director. The cast includes Seo Seontaek, Jung Howon, Seo Hyorim, Shin Bokyung, Jung Sungjoon, Kang Jaeyoon, Lee Yaein, and Kwon Changmin.
Moonjibang was founded in Busan in 2019, mainly by alumni of Kyungsung University's Department of Theater and Film. The company has gained attention for presenting distinctive works at festivals such as the Miryang Performing Arts Festival, the Busan International Performing Arts Festival, and the Seoul Mirae Theater Festival. This year, they have introduced a variety of original plays, including "Drilling," "Haboob," and "Deficit of Understanding."
"Celebration Cake" was first performed in 2019 at the rehearsal studio of Kyungsung University's Department of Theater and Film in Busan. It gained recognition by winning the Best Play Award and the Excellence in Acting Award at the 2020 Miryang Performing Arts Festival University Theater Competition. In 2022, it was selected for the Youth Support Challenge at the Busan International Performing Arts Festival. Since then, it has been continuously performed in Busan, Miryang, and Daehakro in Seoul, establishing itself as Moonjibang's first repertoire piece.
The running time of "Celebration Cake" is approximately 90 minutes. Performances are at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m. on weekends. Tickets can be reserved through Interpark Ticket.
