Photo of Jung Chungrae With Silla Crown Sparks Backlash
Deleted After Criticism
Gyeongju Visit for APEC Summit Preparation
Jung Chungrae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, posted a photo on his social media that appeared to show him wearing a Silla-era gold crown. However, after facing a wave of criticism, he deleted the post.
On August 22, it was reported that Jung Chungrae visited Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province from August 19 to 20 to inspect preparations for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. During this visit, he stopped by the National Gyeongju Museum and uploaded photos of himself viewing cultural artifacts.
However, some of the photos sparked unexpected controversy. One image gave the illusion that Jung Chungrae was wearing the Cheonmachong gold crown, National Treasure No. 188, which is a symbol of Silla's golden culture.
Although he did not actually wear the crown, reactions among his supporters were divided. Some posted positive comments such as "Go, leader!" and "Thank you for your hard work," while others expressed criticism, saying, "This is President Lee Jaemyung's time, are you seeking attention?" and "Is he claiming to be king? This is disrespectful to President Lee."
