Ulsan City to Participate in the 21st Korea-Japan Hokuriku Economic Exchange Conference

Sharing Regional Economic and Port Visions and Cooperation Strategies from August 24 to 27
City to Host Conference in 2028 in Conjunction with the International Garden Expo

Ulsan City is set to strengthen economic and industrial cooperation with Japan's Hokuriku region.

From August 24 to 27, the city will participate in the 21st Korea-Japan (Hokuriku) Economic Exchange Conference, held in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, where it will present strategies to revitalize the local economy and share its future vision for Ulsan Port.

The conference will be attended by 130 participants, including representatives from local governments of both Korea and Japan, as well as port and logistics officials.

Under the theme "60th Anniversary of Korea-Japan Diplomatic Normalization: Toward Growth and Development of Regional Economies," the event will focus on discussing regional revitalization policies and cooperation measures for port logistics businesses between the East Sea Rim and Hokuriku regions.

In its presentation on "Regional Revitalization Policies," Ulsan City will outline its plans to: ▲ establish a foundation for future new growth, ▲ secure industrial innovation and new growth engines through the creation of a Ulsan-style manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI) innovation hub, ▲ strengthen transportation infrastructure and regional connectivity, and ▲ improve the cultural, tourism, and residential environment.

The Ulsan Port Authority will introduce the competitiveness of Ulsan Port and its business expansion strategies under the theme "Ulsan Port: The Largest Energy Hub in Northeast Asia, Present and Future."

A city official stated, "Through this conference, we aim to strengthen the foundation for economic and industrial cooperation with Japanese regions and lay the groundwork for joint growth between the East Sea Rim and Hokuriku regions."

The Korea-Japan (Hokuriku) Economic Exchange Conference is a venue where four regions from Korea's east coast (Ulsan, Daegu, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk) and three prefectures from Japan's Hokuriku region (Fukui, Ishikawa, Toyama) complement each other's regional resources-such as capital, technology, and talent-to expand trade, investment, and industrial technology exchanges.

Since the first conference was held in Toyama, Japan, in 2000, the two countries have alternated hosting the event every year. Ulsan plans to host the Hokuriku (Economic Exchange) Conference in 2028 in conjunction with the International Garden Expo.

The Hokuriku region accounts for about 3% of Japan's total economy and is known for its advanced heavy industries, including automotive, industrial and construction machinery, electrical and electronic sectors, as well as pharmaceutical and bio industries. This gives it high potential for future new industry cooperation, and the region has shown keen interest in economic exchanges with Korea.

Accordingly, Ulsan City also places high strategic value on the region as a bridgehead for entering the Japanese market.
