Opening Remarks at the 'International Streaming Summit' on August 22
"AI Is the Key Factor for Competitiveness in the Media Industry"
Jemyung Ryu, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, emphasized the need to advance the media industry based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and to pursue global expansion.
In his opening remarks at the '2025 International Streaming Summit' held at the Paradise Hotel in Busan on August 22, Vice Minister Ryu stated, "AI is emerging as a key technology for producing high-quality content at lower costs and for more easily providing viewers with content they prefer."
Online video services (OTT) have already formed a global market worth 600 trillion won, and in the United States, streaming viewership is surpassing TV broadcasting for the first time this year, demonstrating the growing influence of the sector.
He added, "AI is being widely used in the field, from content production to automating subtitles and dubbing, as well as personalized advertising and curation. It has now become the key factor determining the competitiveness and survival of the media industry."
Vice Minister Ryu went on to say, "In line with these changes, the government is focusing its efforts on promoting the spread of AI in the media content sector and supporting global expansion under the national goal of becoming one of the top three AI powers."
He also reported that the government is concentrating on driving AI innovation in the domestic media industry by: supporting the adoption of AI at all stages of media production including OTT; expanding investment and research and development in new AI media technologies; promoting the overseas expansion of AI dubbing-based K-fast channels; and fostering talent in AI-converged media.
