A worker in his 60s died after falling while installing a retaining wall at a road construction site in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province.
According to the South Jeolla Fire Headquarters and the Ministry of Employment and Labor on August 22, at around 2:01 p.m. the previous day, a 69-year-old worker, identified as A, fell about 3 meters at a construction site in Dogok-myeon, Hwasun-gun. A was immediately transported to the hospital but ultimately died.
The accident occurred during the process of moving a panel, when an excavator operator misinterpreted a hand signal.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor immediately launched an investigation into the accident, ordered a partial suspension of work, and began an inquiry into possible violations of the Industrial Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
The Serious Accidents Punishment Act stipulates that if a major accident, such as a worker's death, is caused by a violation of safety and health obligations, the employer or management can be held criminally liable.
